How to Start a Reading Habit That Lasts

To build a reading habit, start with a tiny goal such as one page a day, read at a fixed time and place, keep a book within reach, and track each day you read.

Start smaller than feels useful

Aim for one page or five minutes. The point is to make starting so easy that you do it on busy days too. Most people read more than their minimum once they begin.

Choose a fixed time and place

Reading after dinner on the sofa or before bed in bed gives your brain a cue. You can attach it to an existing routine using habit stacking.

Make the book easy to reach

  • Keep a book on your pillow or next to the kettle.
  • Put an e-reader on your phone’s home screen.
  • Use audiobooks for commutes and chores if they suit you.

Pick books you want to finish

Abandoning a book that bores you is fine. A habit is easier to keep when the reading is enjoyable.

Track it

A visible streak is a quiet motivator. In Leeway you can create a habit such as “Read 20 pages” with a reminder, and use the streak view and heatmap to see consistency build. If a week gets away from you, leeway days mean a missed evening does not reset the count.

Aim for a reading life that survives busy weeks, not a perfect record.

Give your habits some leeway.
