How to Keep Your Habits When You Travel or Get Sick

When you travel or get sick, switch to a minimum version of your habit, or pause it on purpose. Then restart the next day without trying to make up for lost time.

Plan a minimum version

Decide ahead of time what the smallest version of each habit looks like. A 20-minute workout becomes five push-ups. Reading 20 pages becomes one page. On a travel day, the minimum version keeps the routine alive.

Know the difference between a pause and a miss

If you are ill, resting is the right choice. Pausing on purpose is different from drifting away. A planned pause has an end date, and you restart on it.

Travel tips

  • Pack a small cue: a book, a resistance band, a journal.
  • Anchor the habit to something that still happens, like your morning coffee.
  • Expect a different schedule and adjust the reminder time.

When you are sick

  • Rest first. Habits can wait.
  • Pause tracking so the break is not counted as a failure.
  • Restart with the smallest version when you feel better.

How Leeway helps

You can snooze a habit for 3 days, a week or until a date you choose. The streak freezes and no leeway days are used. Reminders keep working offline, which is handy on flights. See offline and private.
